Duel (1971)
Truly a wonderful episode. It had everything I like so much about your podcast: in depth analysis, fun and personal insights. “Come True” is a movie that’s fun to dissect, but I respect if people don’t have the time or interest to go further than just watching it. I guess I would’ve still liked it without going deeper, just for the dreamlike imagery. I’m a sucker for movies, that throw me into bizarre worlds, that are only an inch away from our own reality.
As for the ending. I understand people could be pissed, I think Michael said something in the line of he doesn’t always need an explanation even if things don’t make a lot of sense to still enjoy a movie and he’s right, but I didn’t mind the spelling out of it at all. When the message came up I was like “oh, so they’re going the “Open your Eyes”-route, o.k., o.k..”. Which by the way also is a cool movie to check out if you haven’t seen it yet (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0125659/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0). Then again… who knows if the message really was from reality?
It’s great how you sometimes open up about your own experiences which makes me enjoy your podcast even more, because I can relate to so much you’re talking about. Brimstone-Episode ref. Religion: I spent my childhood and early teens as a mormon so I feel with Dustin (or was it Michael). Dukey Flyswatter-Episode ref. Punk: I was a teen in the eighties (yes, I’m that old) and played in a Punk-Rock band and it was fun hearing you talk fondly of some of those bands I used to listen to (and still do). Or like in this episode where you were talking about night terrors. When I was a kid I regularly had sleep paralysis, never saw a shadow figure though, lots of other terrible stuff, but not that. Interestingly the fear of going to sleep and the dark was something that pulled me to Horror. Confronting rather than run away.
Ah, but I’m rambling… In a nutshell: great work, keep it up!
Thanks so much man, we always look forward to your feedback and input. As much fun as it is to get our own thoughts out there, it is just as great to hear back what others think as well. We never know if the personal insights go too far afield, so it’s good to hear they’ve been at least somewhat refreshing haha.
The longer I have sat with it after the episode, the more I realize that the ending doesn’t really matter in a sense, to me anyway. Jason was in an interesting place having already seen the film and mentioned that he enjoyed it even more the second time. I went back and rewatched it myself and had the same vibe. Like you said who knows if that is really a message from our reality. Ultimately, it’s just a really cool film that leaves you with a lot to think about. It’s one I’m sure I will revisit often, just to introduce it to other people if nothing else.
We definitely need to do religion in film or religious horror or something as a topic at some point down the road. We all three probably have quite a lot to get into there.
I feel you on the appeal of horror. As a kid I was often afraid of just about everything, including anything horror-related, but at some point, it clicked that it’s a safe way to engage with and confront fears.
